Isaiah 27
November 14, Year 2
[1] In that day the LORD with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.
The Hebrew word for "Leviathan" (לִוְיָתָן, Livyatan) connotes a twisted or coiled shape. The verb root is probably lavah (לָוָה), which means "to twist" or "to coil." Leviathan is a serpentine sea monster, a huge, writhing creature.
Again, not arbitrary. Any craftsperson or builder knows the difficulties of working with materials that are not straight or square. Consider all our metaphors for bad behavior:
“crooked”
“bent”
“warped”
“twisted”
“skewed”
So once again we have the straight versus the curved, the straight sword versus a bent serpent, specifically the Dragon.
The book of Revelation gives us the fulfillment: The Archangel Michael will be God’s instrument.
