Psalm 131
Like a child
3 But I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child upon his mother’s breast
David takes the attitude of a weaned child—disciplined, and in the first steps of independence from its mother, but still a child.
At their best, children symbolize innocence, trust (and therefore vulnerability), and humility (often manifested in teachability).
They speak without a filter—“out of the mouths of babes.” [Psalm 8:2]
They express affection, and love easily—Let the little children come to me.
(So those who take advantage of children are subject to special judgment/condemnation/consequences—symbolized by the millstone.)
This is the attitude of the pilgrim ascending to Jerusalem to worship Almighty God—childlike.
So…
Think of an example of a child who inspires you to trust God.
Pray the whole psalm:
Psalm 131 Domine, non est 1 O Lord, I am not haughty; * I have no proud looks. 2 I do not occupy myself with great matters, * or with things that are too high for me. 3 But I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child upon his mother’s breast; * so is my soul quieted within me. 4 O Israel, trust in the Lord * from this time forth for evermore.
